It’s embarrassing to read reporting on reputable news blog sites when the sloppiness is so blatant that you’re compelled to devote precious free time to writing a blog post so it can be pointed out.

Such is the case tonight in regards to Gigaom writer Matthew Ingram, who’s report Digg Redesign Met With a Thumbs Down did very little research beyond reading an earlier post from another blogger, Allen Stern.

The main issue I have with Ingram’s post is that he undercut the life and soul of weekly podcast The Drill Down, main host Andrew Sorcini — also referred to as MrBabyMan on Digg.

Andy isn’t just a Digg user though. He’s the top submitter of popular content to the site since it’s early days of birth. For Christ sake, NPR had ReadWriteWeb Editor Marshall Kirkpatrick on air to specifically talk about MrBabyMan, in which he reveals his real name within the first few moments of the broadcast.

Need more convincing?

Notable writer Farhad Manjoo wrote a wonderfully detailed article titled Why MrBabyMan is the king of all social media where he makes the bold statement: “Andrew Sorcini is the Michael Phelps of Digg.”

And the most ridiculous thing about Ingram’s reporting is that I highly doubt he even visited the official website for The Drill Down, which explicitly states who all the hosts are. (Not to mention that the quotes from Ingram’s post about the Digg v4 criticism came directly from the most recent episode, but you probably get the point I’m trying to make now.)

So, forgive me if I think this is a detail that shouldn’t have lazily been glossed over in a report.

I know all of this information because Andy is a friend of mine. However, I found all the links added above (again) by doing a Google search. It was free and these links made this post you’re reading invaluably more credible.

Some of you might wonder why I’m singling out Ingram and not the initial blogger who failed to mention the real identity of MrBabyMan. Well, that first blogger gets a pass because he actually did some original reporting for his story. Had he simply read someone else’s work and regurgitated it back without adding any real value (like Ingram), he’d be hearing it, too.

And, forgive me yet again but, when your bio reads: “Mathew Ingram is an award-winning journalist who has spent the past 15 years writing about business, technology and new media as a reporter, columnist and blogger” — you have absolutely no excuse for this kind of sloppy reporting — and even less of an excuse by then covering your ass by closing the comments down so no one can point out mistakes.

But shit happens and journalists have off days. I’m willing to change my opinion of Ingram a full 180 degrees* if he updates the post and publicly states his massive error has now been corrected via facebook and/or Twitter.

Otherwise, I don’t expect to bother with Gigaom well into the future.

[DISCLAIMER: I am a professional journalist, friend of Andrew Sorcini, and a non-power user of digg who is also a Co-host on The Drill Down with Sorcini, Muhammad Saleem and J.D. Rucker]

*Thank you Crispy

The Devil went down to Digg, he was looking for some content to steal.

He was in a bind cause he was way behind so he was willing to make a deal.

He came upon this young man Digging some submissions and making em hot!

When he saw him he shot a DM that said “Boy lemme tell you wat!”

“In case you didn’t know it I’m a Power Digger too, and if you care to make a dare I’ll make a bet with you. Now you’re a pretty good Digger boy but give the Devil his due, I’ll bet a Shovel of Gold against your Mac Book Pro ‘Co$ I think I’m better than you!”

The Boy said “My name’s Andy, and it might be a sin, but I’ll take your bet, you’re gonna regret ‘cause I’m the best that’s ever been!”

Andy fire up your feeds and plug submissions hard, cause hell’s broke loose on Digg and the Devil’s a retard. If you win you get this shiny shovel made of Gold, but if you lose the Devil gets your Mac Book Prooooooooooo!

The Devil fired up his Dell and he said I’ll start this show, and fire flew from his finger tips his home page was Beebo. When he pulled in his RSS it made an evil hiss, then some outsources from India jumped in and it sounded something like this:

“hello buddy it’s Ramish..can I get a Digg? http://Digg.com/D3v1L?”

“I can get Digg for friend? http://Digg.com/D3v1L?”

When the Devil finished Andy said: “Well you’re pretty good ole’ son, but sit back in your chair right there and lemme show you how it’s done!” Hey Played

College Humor, The Oatmeal, and XKCD! Glen Beck’s a fag, Anti Scientology. Tea Party Morons, The Daily Show, Zombie Apocolypse, and Sarah Pailn’s a ho!

Well the Devil bowed his head ‘cause he knew that he’d been beat, and he laid that Golden Shovel on the ground at Andy’s feat. “Devil just come on back if you ever wanna try again, and when you’re asked my user name well it’s MRBABYMAN!” He played:

College Humor, The Oatmeal, and XKCD! Glen Beck’s a fag, Anti Scientology. Tea Party Morons, The Daily Show, Zombie Apocolypse, and Sarah Pailn’s a ho!
