I agree with the sentiment about leaving TweetSpeak on Twitter, but I disagree with your idea of removing the @ symbol off of someone’s name when linking to their Twitter profile.

Using the @symbol immediately tells readers that the link is going to lead to a Twitter profile. It’s kind of like placing a PDF icon next to a link that leads to a PDF file. It’s a courtesy.
